As the world’s demand for tequila continues to grow, agave spirits are becoming a go-to choice for those seeking a spirit beyond the ordinary. Often overshadowed by one of the most regulated spirits in the world, agave alternatives offer an opportunity for distillers to purchase variations without CRT certification in 2024.

Golden Boom: Tequila's Surge in Popularity

The past four years have brought an unexpected surge in tequila sales, with 75% of its value derived from the United States –  Mexico’s largest export destination. The US Distilled Spirits Council reported that since 2003, volumes have grown 294%, an average of 7.1% a year.

The global market size reached $16.5 Billion in 2023 alone. It is estimated that the tequila market in Europe (EU) will grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 4.43% in terms of revenue and quantity, respectively (between 2021 and 2028). Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy follow the US in terms of importing the renowned spirit.

Agave Spirits: A Great Alternative to Tequila

While tequila is the most well-known agave spirit, there are other varieties to explore. At Sasma BV, we offer Mezcal (the close cousin of tequila) and 100% agave-based spirits. They are deeply rooted in Mexican tradition and typically crafted in small batches.

  • Mezcal offers a distinct smoky flavor profile derived from traditional production methods involving underground pit roasting of agave hearts. This spirit comes from different regions in Mexico and is available in a variety of classifications: joven, reposado, and añejo varieties.
  • Agave is the primary ingredient in various spirits, such as tequila and mezcal, offering a versatile base with unique flavor characteristics. The other variations primarily produced in Mexico include mezcal, raicilla, bacanora, and sotol.

Businesses must comply with stringent regulations to reap the rewards and obtain premium tequila. Various laws are in place to safeguard the Mexican spirit, ensuring its quality and production standards, like CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila) certification. CRT requires all parts of a business to adhere to restrictions for importing, exporting, bottling, and selling 100% agave tequilas. Various forms of documentation are required to begin the process, and it can take a minimum of three months to complete.

Fortunately, agave/mezcal alternatives do not require CRT. Bulk high-quality agave-based spirits are a better alternative and a great long-term investment. The current drop in agave prices this month presents a great opportunity to inquire about bulk 100% agave and mezcal spirits as they continue to gain increased prominence across the alcohol industry. Craft new and exciting flavor profiles that go beyond what tequila has to offer.
